So I should probably preface this post by making two confessions: 1:My family sucks at getting me gifts I want. Like, really, really sucks. I realized this after my last birthday when nothing happened the way I would have wanted it to. So I started getting blunt and real and opened my big mouth a little wider to make sure they knew what I wanted, so no one was disappointed. And no, they don’t hate this…they love it. They thank me for it. So I strongly suggest you try it. And 2: I already know what I’m getting for Mother’s Day…because I followed #1. And I’m not upset.
Of course if you ask a mother what she wants for Mother’s Day, you’re likely to hear “just to spend a day with my family”. That’s because moms are notorious at not speaking up for themselves. What they are probably thinking is “just a day to spend however I want, actually two or three days to do whatever I want would be heavenly.” Because as much as we love our families, every mom needs a break from them. And no, going to work or the grocery store alone does NOT count. I mean, a real break. Luckily for me, I got that this past weekend, when the kids went to go visit their grandmother. Sure, Music Man was still here, but he had to work Friday and Saturday and with only one exception, I pretty much had the two days to myself to do whatever I wanted. Which in my case was some cleaning and organizing, but I actually LOVE cleaning and organizing when my family isn’t home, because it’s way easier without a toddler “helping”, teenagers complaining and husband who’s idea of “”helping” is to question every little decision.
And of course, Moms also want a gift. And while jewelry and fun stuff might be nice for birthdays and Christmas, I subscribe to the popular opinion that getting mom something useful yet something she wouldn’t buy for herself is the PERFECT Mother’s Day gift. So here are my suggestions of what to get your mom for mother’s day. All have two-day or express shipping, which means it’s not too late to order them…so if you’re a mom reading this, feel free to send this entire post to your partner or kids with the words HINT HINT in bold. They’ll thank you, I promise.
PS: I’m not getting paid to write this post, there are ZERO affiliate links, so feel free to click away (or not)…cause I’m not making any money off this. Just trying to help a few fellow mamas out.
I admit-I was reluctant to jump on the Insta-Pot craze…BUT now it’s on my list. I don’t have one-yet-but the idea of replacing my crockpot, rice cooker and other small appliances totally fits into my philosophy that everything in my kitchen be a multi-tasker. There have been many upgrades, including a new wifi version that you can control with your phone…but honestly, even as tech-loving as I am, the original still holds a lot of appeal. The recipes and resources for this gadget are endless, and if you are a frequent crockpot user like I am, this is perfect.
Again, another gadget where I was a skeptic. But my hubby already owned one and when our blender bit the dust, he brought it home from where it was living at his office (unused) and now it’s used almost every day. Smoothies, soups, drinks…basically this thing can destroy anything you put in it. I’ve even used it as a substitute food processor for a couple of things. It’s not a full replacement, but compared to other blenders, this is worth the investment. And it’s dishwasher safe. Yay!
Okay, so I admit-I have been without a food processor for almost a year. And at first, I was okay with it. But there have been enough times over the last year when I needed a food processor so I’m currently looking for a new one. (FYI: my old blender was also a food processor…the Ninja blender/processor and it was AWESOME, however…the Vitamix is such a better blender so I’m not replacing it). I have my eye on this model because of price and reputation. And even if I do use it once a month, it will still be worth it when my family begs me to make pie more often (their favorite thing I make with a food processor is pie crust!). You can also use it to chop and slice veggies!
Every mom needs a coffee pot. And if your mom/wife/woman doesn’t drink coffee…find out what she can’t get through the day without (tea, wine, water…trust me, every woman has something she relies on). But for the majority…it’s a coffee pot. Talk to your “mother” and figure out what she wants. It may be a single-cup machine, a latte machine, or just an old-fashioned glass carafe coffee pot. If you already have one, consider getting some expensive coffee, or maybe something like a french press. French Presses make amazing coffee, and are great when you’re only drinking one or two cups.
Another item on my dream list, because I have kids, and pets that make messes. And I have a pet peeve about my floors being dirty. We have a vacuum, and also an old-fashioned carpet sweeper for in between vacuums (it’s also great for little kids to use). But I dream of the day I can set my robot vacuum and forget about it.
And of course, if you have a robot vacuum…you need a robot mop! I’m so glad they have one out now, because I may get this before the vacuum because my kitchen floors need even more help cause food spills and such. This model sweeps and mops, which is even better! Again, make your mom/wife/sister/woman in your life happy and give her the gift of automatically cleaned floors. She will thank you.
I know there are tons of scent warmers/oil diffusers/outlet warmers out on the market…and I’m not going to recommend one over the other because everyone is different. For us, we are very careful about scents and scented items because certain ones (even organically occurring smells) can trigger reactions in three of the four humans living in our house, as well as not being safe for our pets-something most people don’t think about. HOWEVER…a nice smelling house is a great way to boost your mood, so I recommend you find one and indulge her in some favorite smells. Pick it out together, she will love it. I use mine almost daily and I’m not the only one who will comment on how nice the house smells. So this could be a family-wide gift!
What mom doesn’t love technology? And this is something most moms will never buy for themselves. So treat her and get her a tablet/laptop that she can use to play games, surf the net, connect with other moms, or just write a journal on.
I work as a freelancer photographer and I cannot tell you how many times moms come up to me to ask about my camera. While camera phones and point and shoots are popular and easy, sometimes we just want to be able to take nice photos of our family! This is one of those gifts I don’t think is often thought of, but after I bought my first one as a mother’s day gift to myself years ago, I realized how many other moms would love it based on the comments I got. And it’s one that will last: a decent DSLR body can last for over ten years, and lenses about the same…plus there is no end of accessories you can buy for future gifts.
The life-long struggle to find a good purse that does it all is something women have been facing for DECADES. Recently backpacks came back into trend and men seemed perplex but we women get it! Purses can get heavy, slide off our arms, or be too small to hold everything we haul around everyday. Enter the backpack/purse combo that can be both. There are many different styles, so even if Mom gets bored of a certain pattern or color you can always find something else she will like.
Okay, this isn’t that impersonal. Giving the lady of your life a gift card to her favorite store is really very sweet. Tell her to buy herself something and for once not worry about budget. It’s a rare thing for women to spend more money on themselves than their families, but a gift card for just that occasion will give her no excuse not to indulge. Also good if you have to mail a gift…a gift card fits in almost every greeting card and doesn’t increase postage!
Another tech gadget I waited to buy but now cannot live without is a smart watch. Depending on what phone or OS Mom prefers there are dozens out there. Being able to read texts and emails, see who is calling, track their fitness and heart rate, set a timer, enable their smart assistant like Google or Siri, all without picking up a phone or computer is amazing. Especially for new moms who may have their hands full with baby. I got my first one right before I had my son and just being able to check texts while feeding him and setting alarms that vibrated instead of rang was priceless.
While most homes have an Amazon Echo or Google Assistant or other versions, if Mom doesn’t have one, consider getting her one. Ours can control the tv, reorder my most used items from Amazon Prime, set reminders, give the kids a weather report every morning, and so much more. Again, hands-free is amazing.
While subscription boxes are exploding and cover everything from food to makeup to crafts to yarn, a favorite of mine is the succulents from Succulent Studios. Succulents are easy to care for plants, and this company makes an effort to be as environmentally friendly as possible. I love getting two new little babies every month, and love knowing that having them in the house is good for us as well (plants absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen…and are way prettier than an air purifier!). You can even sign up for yourself AND gift mom a subscription from across the country. Once you sign up, you can always send the details with your card, and watch Mom smile every single month as she is reminded of your great gift!
And that’s it! My Mother’s Day gift guide! Again, feel free to forward this to the man in your life and say “I like number…”, or send it to a woman you know as a way to find out what she really wants. And I hope everyone has a great Mother’s Day!
