Crock-pot Tomato Sauce-Cooking with Kids

If your toddler is like The Maestro-they LOVE to help out around the house, especially in the kitchen. And if you have teenagers, like I also have , you know that it doesn’t last long. Right now it’s a game to pick up shoes and put cups in the sink, but if my son is anything like his big sisters, soon I won’t be able to get him to hang up his wet towels or put dirty laundry in the hamper without major effort.

For now though, my son is three and LOVES to help his mama around the house. And if it involves making his favorite foods, he will be right there on his step stool, ready to do as much as we let him. Obviously, he cant do it all-cooking and dealing with a hot oven are too much. But one thing he can do is help with the crock-pot.

We love our crock-pot around here. If you read my Mother’s Day Gift Guide, you’ll know that I use it weekly, even though I work from home. I still have days when dinner is going to be rushed, so being able to “set it and forget it” is a lifesaver. We start this tomato sauce in the morning on low, and by dinner time it’s ready to be poured over pasta, veggie noodles, rice, whatever you like!

I also get premade meatballs from our local grocery store and will add them in around lunchtime and I’ll be honest-just the meatballs and sauce is usually a meal for me. Crock-Pot Tomato Sauce

  • 28 oz can Crushed Tomatoes
  • 15 oz can Tomato Puree
  • 14.5 oz can Diced Tomatoes
  • 3 Tablespoons Minced Garlic
  • 1 teaspoon finely ground Black Pepper
  • 3 Tablespoons Basil Leaves
  • 2 Tablespoons Rosemary
  • 2 Tablespoons Oregano

Add all the ingredients to a crock-pot, stir to blend. Cook on low 6-8 hours, stirring occasionally. Cool before stirring.

Note: Like I mentioned, I add meatballs or even occasionally ground meat (beef, pork, chicken or turkey), and serve it over pasta, veggie noodles, rice or even plain! A family favorite that’s also a mom’s favorite because it’s easy and quick!
